(1) Similar goals: One very important factor to creating a successful team is the common thought process of each individual to share a common goal. We could all be from very different backgrounds whether we come from a background of an athlete or a businessperson or even a family. If we each share a common goal and chose to share it with our team, we then have the first step to acquiring success.

(2) Ability to adapt to multiple situations: The ability to adapt to multiple and ever changing situations is vital in the ability to be successful in any of lifes situations. A great man once told me, “Plan Your Race and Race your Plan, But, Have the Ability to change your plan to Win Your Race!” Charles “Chick” Hislop! We cannot always see and predict what the future will bring us, in sports, business or in our families!

(3) Although we are competing against one another, we will go out of our way to help each other. Let me get to this point right away! We as athletes chose to compete against the very best, We would never look to have win over a competitor that has a disadvantage. That is truly not a win!

Bio: Bill Schuffenhauer started his dream of Olympic glory as a decathlete, but after missing the qualification for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, that dream seemed out of reach. That was until he learned about the U.S. Bobsled Team’s search for high caliber track athletes.

Standing at an impressive 6’ at 220 lbs. and with an uncanny desire to win, Bill personified the power it took to become a bobsledder. He joined the National Team in 2000 and realized his dream when he won the silver medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

He grew up in the foster care system during his parents’ struggle with drugs and alcohol. Not wanting to face his parents’ environment, Bill used athletics, including break dancing, to avoid drugs and violence. Bill became inspired to become an Olympian when his high school coaches introduced him to track & field. “When my coaches told me about how the Olympics were the highest achievement for an athlete it became my dream. So I decided to never give it up or let anything get in my way, including my past,” said Bill.

Bill Schuffenhauer helped the U.S. end the 46-year medal drought in the sport of bobsled by pushing Todd Hays to a silver medal at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah.
